The current version of the Portland flag was adopted in 2002, however, a previous 1969 version had the same look and feel but with smaller lines and had included the city’s seal. The four blue lines come together at a center white star ’hypocycloid’. The star represents the city’s perch close to the intersection of the Columbia and Willamette rivers (the blue). The gold represents agriculture (Portland is a large exporter of wheat) and commerce. The green signifies the plentiful forests surrounding the city.
