The current flag of Phoenix was adopted in 1990. It features the mythological bird that shares its name with the city. The purple background could be a nod to the origin of the word “phoenix” which is said in some parts to refer to the purple dye produced by Phoenicia - an ancient Mediterranean civilization close to modern day Lebanon.
