The current flag of New York City was adopted in 1915. It features blue, white and orange vertical bands representing the Dutch Republic flag’s scheme in the 1600’s as New York was first settled by the Dutch. In the middle of the flag sits the seal of New York City. It consists of many separate elements. An eagle on a hemisphere represents the state of New York and also exists on the state’s flag. Two figures holding a shield represent a Dutch sailor and a Native American from the ‘Manhattan’ tribe. The Native American holds a bow while the Dutch sailor holds a sounding line with plummet used for measuring depths of water. On the shield is a cross of windmill sails (another nod to the Dutch history) as well as flour barrels and beavers (fur) to represent two important industries at the time the area was founded. Below the figures is the number 1625, the year the Dutch first settled the area. The words “Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci” mean “The Seal of the City of New York” and the whole seal is wrapped in a laurel wreath with a small opening at the top.
