The current flag of El Paso was adopted in 1962. It sports a star at the center (as do many other city flags in Texas) to show the city’s seat in the ‘Lone Star State’. Around the star is a bright yellow sun depicting the city’s nickname as ‘The Sun City’ where the sun shines 83% of daylight hours. Green olive leaves flank the sun and two ribbons sit on the top and bottom displaying the city’s name and state.
Each color is meant to represent something different: golden yellow - richness of the sunny climate, yellow/green - hope, good fortune, fertile land and vitality, silver - faith, blue - sincerity, red/purple - fellowship, warmth and shelter.
