The current flag of Austin was adopted in 1919. It sports a framework from the crest of Stephen F. Austin (also referred to as the ’Father of Texas’ for his hand in working toward the independence of Texas from Mexico). The shield as well as the wreath, wings and cross at the top of the shield are from this crest. The colors inside the shield allude to both the Texas state flag as well as the American flag. The lamp represents knowledge, as Austin is home to one of the largest universities in the US (University of Texas at Austin) and last but definitely not least is the Texas State Capitol in the background highlighted by its noticeable dome.
