Toronto
Design
The Toronto flag has 2 aspects by which it is defined: the white lines and the red maple leaf.
The white lines outline the shape of the twin towers that make up Toronto's City Hall. The red maple leaf represents the Council Chamber which sits at the base of the twin towers.
Fun Facts
- The flag was designed by a 21 year old college student, Renato De Santis, as part of a design competition held in 1974
- In 1997, a new city of Toronto was formed by combining the former cities: East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, York and Toronto. A new design competition was initiated but the current design held fast and only its dimensions were modified
- The shape created by the blue space above and between the white lines suggest the letter 'T'
- The flag has received criticism in the past whereby if it is turned upside-down, it suggests the shape of a crotch covered by a leaf
- Toronto also has a logo that shows the twin towers of City Hall
